The Schools of Informatics in conjunction with the School of Nursing as well as Schools of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences is offering an Advanced Certificate in Medical/Health Informatics. Upon completion of this certificate program, students will be prepared to work in information related positions in health care, health sciences research, or education settings, and have the ability to evaluate, manage, and develop a wide range of informatics projects.

The School of Nursing has been an integral component of the development of this program since its conception in late 2001. As part of the curriculum, Dr. Scott Erdley, Clinical Assistant Professor, and Dr. Kay Sackett, Clinical Associate Professor, both in the School of Nursing, co-teach a core requirement, MHI536/NUR 593 Informatics and the Health Care Environment.

Open to all nursing graduate students as well as those pursuing the informatics certificate, this course introduces students to the health care environment emphasizing the interface between the health care delivery system and informatics. Additionally, various environments where health care is obtained, including clinics, hospitals and community settings will be introduced. The students will become familiar with health care terminology, government health policies, and the influence of managed care organizations on the health care environment.

Course Descriptions

The Advanced Studies Certificate in Medical/Health Informatics requires 20 credit hours of coursework of which 14 are required hours and 6 are elective hours.

MHI 501 Introduction to Medical/Health Informatics (6 Credits)
Origins of the discipline, its terminology and concept definitions, its relationship to other disciplines, and its areas or research and application development. Includes medical/health information system architectures and classification systems, electronic medical records, decision support, telemedicine, and other topics.

MHI 536/NUR 593 Informatics and the Health Care Environment (3 Credits)
Introduction to health care environment emphasizing roles of various health professions and their information needs. Covers health care terminology, the influence of managed care organizations, and government health policies within the context of health care informatics.

MHI 504 Ethical, Social, and Human Factors in Medical/Health Informatics (3 Credits)
Overview of medical ethics, with emphasis on practical, clinical, and research issues, especailly as related to medical/health informatics. Review of social and human engineering factors in design and implementation of medical informatics systems.

MHI 511 Medical/Health Informatics Colloquium and Journal Club (2 Credits)
Weekly seminars and students presentations on current topics in medical/health informatics.

Electives (6 Credits)
The 6 elective hours may include additional selections from the University at Buffalo Advanced Certificate in Medical/Health Informatics elective courses or any other graduate-level UB course approved by a faculty advisor.
