The Family Nurse Practitioner Program offers the
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) programs focuses on the development of nurse practitioners who are clinically and culturally competent to deliver primary care across the age spectrum. There is also a special emphasis on the primary care assessment, treatment, and referral of clients experiencing addictions and co-occurring mental health problems. Students receive didactic and clinical preparation to assess and treat primary care problems of individuals and families from diverse populations and for those who reside in under served (inner city and rural) areas.
The program meets the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) guidelines and graduates of the program are eligible for New York State certification and are encouraged to take the national FNP- ANCC certification exam. They are also eligible to sit for the Certified Addictions Registered Nurse-Advanced Practice ( CARN -AP) exam , which is administered by the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (ANCB).
The FNP program is currently a hybrid distance education course. Students can access all of the specialty courses online or by using the personal polycom technology that is currently supported by our HRSA, Bureau of Health Professions, Advanced Nurse Education grant. The advanced health assessment sequence of modules is not available in an online or videoconference format , which requires that students must come to class to participate in this course offered in the fall semester only. Other core nursing courses are currently in transition from traditional onsite to online formats. However, these changes are not assured at this time. Interested students should contact
Ms. Marge Rosseland, Assistant to the Director of the FNP program to learn more about distance education options in this curriculum.

* Credits cannot be transferred into a certificate program. A maximum number of 46 credit hours is required to complete the Family Nurse Practitioner advanced certificate. However, credits may be waived if the individual’s transcript indicates that the required course or its equivalent has been taken within the last 10 years. Only the faculty member teaching the required course can determine equivalency of content during a formal review process, initiated by the student. Despite the number of courses that are permitted to be waived, all students in this program must complete at least 24 credit hours and 300 clinical hours, all which must be taken at the University at Buffalo. No other exemptions are allowed, or will be considered.
