TheChild Health / Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program (PNP) offers the

This program prepares baccalaureate nurses to provide care to children who receive services in ambulatory and acute settings, a variety of clinical agencies and the home. The services provided by PNPs include (1) promoting, maintaining and restoring health through history taking, physical assessment, diagnostic tests prescribing and educating children and families; (2) collaborating and consulting with other professionals; (3) coordinating services for children and families; and (4) referrals to other professionals as appropriate.

Practicums and clinical seminars are tailored to meet the educational needs of the student. Students are encouraged to initiate and/or participate in research projects focused on improving the quality and cost effectiveness of health care to children and their families. An early admission program has been developed to allow undergraduate students to apply to the program. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for several national certification examinations depending on the focus of their study and to be certified by the New York State Education Department.

* Credits cannot be transferred into a certificate program. A maximum number of 35 credit hours is required to complete the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner advanced certificate. However, credits may be waived if the individual’s transcript indicates that the required course or its equivalent has been taken within the last 10 years. Only the faculty member teaching the required course can determine equivalency of content during a formal review process, initiated by the student. Despite the number of courses that are permitted to be waived, all students in this program must complete at least 12 credit hours and 300 clinical hours, all which must be taken at the University at Buffalo. No other exemptions are allowed, or will be considered.
