Access to care is one of my passions. My prior work in telemedicine as well as healthcare centers, including my private practice, helps to provide access to quality care when and where people need it. I also love to teach!
Laura Markwick is a licensed nurse practitioner with her own private practice in Rochester, NY. She received her DNP and MS degrees from St. John Fisher College.
Markwick’s areas of interest include access to care for the uninsured and underinsured populations, as well as technology use in the health care setting, specifically telemedicine. Recently, she conducted a research study on the use of technology in conjunction with a flipped classroom design in an undergraduate health assessment course. The study concluded that a flipped classroom in a technologically enhanced room design produced more effective outcomes for the students (currently under review for publication).
Markwick has experience managing an urban health center that provided integrated care with primary care and mental health counseling. Markwick and staff investigated patients affected by obesity, diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia to determine if outcomes were better for patients who received counseling versus those who did not. The team learned anecdotally that outcomes were improved but the sample size was too small to be significant.
Presently, Markwick is co-authoring a textbook illustrating the process of starting a nurse practitioner practice.
