Cash Gifts
Often the simplest way of making a gift is in cash. Cash gifts can be paid by check and fulfilled with one payment or over three to five years. Unrestricted cash gifts are a priority for the School of Nursing because they give the School the greatest flexibility. Your gifts may be unrestricted or you may designate their use for a specific academic unit or area.

Non-Cash Gifts
Appreciated Securities:
A gift of appreciated securities has at least two advantages to the donor: It provides you both an income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities and the elimination of capital gains taxes on the transfer.
Click here for detailed instructions to donate stock.
Real Estate:
A residence or other real property may be given to the School of Nursing as an outright gift, or you may prefer to donate your home or farm to the School and retain the right to occupy the property for life. A gift of a remainder interest in a personal residence or farm provides you with a current income tax deduction for the present value of the remainder interest and also permits you to eliminate capital gains taxes on the appreciation.
Some possible kinds of real estate transfers include:
-
Another option is a bargain sale, which is part gift and part sale. The property is purchased by UB for an amount less than the appraised value. The difference between the fair market value and the purchase price is considered a gift for which you are entitled to an income tax deduction.

Income-Producing Gifts:
Charitable annuities, pooled life income plans and charitable trusts are ways of giving that provide you or your designated beneficiary with a fixed or variable income over time. Many philanthropists use these income-producing gifts to achieve both their charitable and their personal financial goals.
Click here for instructions about donating income-producing gifts.
Tangible Personal Property:
As with gifts of highly appreciated securities or real estate, a gift of tangible personal property that has a marketable value - such as works of art, rare books, precious stones or antiques - can provide desirable tax benefits.
Life Insurance:
A gift of a life insurance policy to the School of Nursing can be made by naming us as owner, primary or successor beneficiary, or irrevocable beneficiary, of a whole life policy. The gift may be a paid up policy, and existing policy with cash value, or a new policy.
Gifts of Closely Held Stock:
A business owner may contribute closely held stock to the School which will provide a current income tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock, as well as the elimination of capital gains taxes on the appreciated value.
Wills and Bequests:
Making a provision in your will for the School of Nursing allows for a substantial contribution without diminishing assets during your lifetime. Since bequests to the School are tax deductible from the estate, significant tax savings are possible.
