UB School of Nursing Faculty Member and Students Volunteer for Hurricane Relief Effort

UB School of Nursing Professor Joann Sands has been mobilized as part of the New York Community Emergency Response Team (NY Cert) to provide medical support to Suffolk County.  Professor Sands a clinical instructor in the School of Nursing and seven student nurse volunteers departed for Suffolk County on November 1st as part of the relief effort.  The group arrived after midnight and are now in Yaphank, NY assisting nurses and nurse practitioners caring for patients in need of medical assistance due to Hurricane Sandy.  The group is staging a medical treatment area located in John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility to care for and treat less acutely ill patients to relieve the congestion of local emergency rooms.  The students pictured are enrolled in their public health course and all volunteered to go and assist victims of Hurricane Sandy.  Dr. Susan Grinslade, Chair of the Undergraduate Program was instrumental in gathering student volunteers to assist in the relief effort.  The students responded immediately to the urgent need for volunteers.  Dean Lewis states, “We are extremely proud of our faculty member and students and want to recognize them for their volunteerism.”
