The prestigious recognition took place at the 2016 GSA Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. The theme of this year’s meeting was "New Lens on Aging: Changing Attitudes, Expanding Possibilities.”

At the meeting, 94 individuals were inducted as fellows by the GSA’s Executive Committee. This distinction is a recognition of the inductee’s contributions to gerontology and is awarded for activities that range from research to public service. Chang was nominated by Helen Lach, professor at her alma mater St. Louis University School of Nursing.

In addition to this honor, Chang also presented in two poster sessions at the five-day event:

  • In the Dementia, Delirium, Depression, Anxiety, and Mental Health session: “Substance Use and Depression in Chinese Older Adults” (co-authors Junxin Li, Yuqing Xue).
  • In the Long-Term Care session: “Person-Centeredness, Residents’ Quality of Life, Family and Staff Well-Being in Long-Term Care” (co-authors Bernadette Willemse, Claire Wessel, Anne Margriet Pot).

The GSA was founded in 1945 and boasts more than 5,500 members. The Society’s primary mission is to “advance the study of aging and disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public.”

Chang’s research areas of interest include substance use and prescription medication use in older adults and caregiving and medication management for individuals with dementia. She earned her PhD in nursing from Saint Louis University. She also holds an MS in psychiatric and mental health nursing and a BS in nursing from Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
