Pam Paplham Receives Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year Award

UB School of Nursing faculty member Pamela Paplham, DNP, AOCNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, was selected as the recipient of the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation’s 2020 Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year Award.

“This award represents the pinnacle of my 30-year career as an oncology nurse practitioner,” Paplham says. “I am truly humbled and honored to have been chosen.”

Paplham was chosen from among the best in the country as a shining example of oncology nursing at its finest. The award recognizes an advanced oncology certified nurse who has made significant contributions to oncology nursing and oncology nursing service and who has supported and promoted oncology nursing certification. Nominees must demonstrate accomplishments in the promotion of oncology nursing certification and oncology nursing service, as well as in two of the following areas of oncology nursing: clinical practice, education, research or consultation.

She will be presented with the award, along with a $1,000 honorarium, on Friday, May 1, during the Recognition Breakfast for Oncology Certified Nurses at the ONS Annual Congress in San Antonio, Texas.

Paplham is committed to the study of oncology. In addition to serving as the assistant dean to the MS/DNP programs and a clinical professor in the UB School of Nursing, Paplham is an adjunct clinical professor for oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Her areas of interest include hematopoietic cell transplant and survivorship, cancer survivorship, telehealth and chronic graft versus host disease. 

Her scholarly activities include developing a hematopoietic cell transplant survivorship care plan; ascertaining unmet needs and compliance with recommended screening of adult hematopoietic cell transplantation survivors followed in a formal survivorship program; and participating in a workgroup, established through the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, with the purpose of establishing preventative practice recommendations for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease following hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Paplham was also chair of the NP/PA American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplant special interest group and co-chair of the NP/PA American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplant education committee. She earned her doctorate in nursing practice from Robert Morris University, her Master of Science (family health nurse practitioner) from University of Rochester and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Alfred University.

May 7, 2020 - The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has chosen Pamela Paplham, DNP, AOCNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, as the 2020 Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP®) of the Year. Dr. Paplham, of Buffalo, New York, was selected for the award based on her contributions to oncology nursing scare, service, support, and promotion of oncology nursing certification.

As a nurse for over 30 years and an AOCNP for 11 years, Dr. Paplham has extensive experience in her field and is considered an innovator by her nominator. She is a Clinical Professor of Nursing and BMT Annual Clinic/Survivorship Nurse Practitioner at SUNY Buffalo and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (RPCCC). From her pioneering early days developing care models for BMT patients to later establishing a survivorship clinic at RPCCC, Dr. Paplham is an exceptional leader in her field.

Dr. Paplham is considered an expert and advocate within her community. She has made numerous media appearances and has volunteered for the National Marrow Donor Program, American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT), Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), and more.

As an educator, Dr. Paplham has published 28 manuscripts related to blood and marrow transplant (BMT) issues. She is also a mentor to her students and has advised more than 25 Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) projects.

In addition to this award, Dr. Paplham has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, received the NP/PA Lifetime Achievement Award from ASBMT and the Josh Gottheil Memorial BMT Career Development Award from ONS.
