The University at Buffalo School of Nursing appreciates the quality and excellence in patient safety and care provided by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in every community. This week during National CRNA week, we commend CRNAs and their dedication to providing the very best anesthesia care.

CRNAs have provided anesthesia care in the United States for over 150 years. And, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), they safely administer approximately 40 million anesthetics to patients each year in a wide range of settings, including in the military, delivery rooms, surgical centers and dentist offices, among many others.

Education and experience required to become a CRNA include graduating with a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program; gaining at least one year of experience as a registered nurse in a critical care setting; and passing the National Certification Examination.

The UB School of Nursing’s Post-BS to DNP Program offers a nurse anesthetist specialty with courses taught exclusively by nurse specialists and CRNAs. Students gain valuable hands-on experience through the utilization of our Patient Simulation Center, the Center for Nursing Research and the health assessment lab.
