Carla Jungquist, PhD, ANP-BC, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, collaborated with three other SUNY at Buffalo researchers to evaluate sleep disturbances in recently concussed individuals to determine how sleep disturbances could potentially impact “exacerbation or persistence of concussion symptoms.”

The study, “Sleep Disturbances in Patients with Chronic Concussive Effects,” is a retroactive review of patients presenting to University Sports Medicine Concussion Management Center in 2009.

The results of the study “suggest a relationship between sleep problems and the time course of recovery from concussive injury.” The researchers conclude that clinicians could benefit from consideration of sleep function when assessing patients’ postconcussive symptoms.

The other researchers include Andrea Hinds, PhD, UB Concussion Management Clinic research manager; John Leddy, MD, clinical professor in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Department of Orthopaedics; and Barry Willer, PhD, professor in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Department of Psychiatry.
