UB School of Nursing researcher reviews practices that can both improve patient safety and significantly reduce monitor associated alarm fatigue.

Carla Jungquist, assistant professor, and her colleague, Paul Curry, UCLA Department of Anesthesiology, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, have developed a framework to individualize the monitoring of post-operative hospitalized patiens on general care floors. "A Critical Assessment of Monitoring Practices, Patient Deterioration, and Alarm Fatigue on Inpatient Wards: A Review" was published in Patient Safety in Surgery (2014).

Study recommendations include further educating nurses on knowledge needed to apply critical thinking skills to individually monitor needs for their patients.
