The University at Buffalo School of Nursing faculty and Teaching Assistants took part in the Tools of Engagement Project (TOEP), a SUNY-wide initiative for on-demand Discovery Learning Professional Development designed to encourage faculty and staff to explore emerging technologies.

The TOEP project is online professional development that encourages faculty and staff to explore and reflect on the use of emerging technology tools. Over this past academic year a community of TOEP learners actively engaged in conversations about how to incorporate emerging technologies and Web 2.0 tools into their pedagogy to engage students.  This project was offered across 10 SUNY campuses.  Kelly Foltz-Ramos, MS, RN, FNP-BC, RHIA, Clinical Lab Coordinator served as a TOEP Fellow helping to mentor and support the faculty. The UB School of Nursing had 8 overall winners including:

1st Place awards for the most pedagogically intriguing use of a TOEP tool:

  • Joan Brady, DNS, RN
  • Susan Bruce, PhD, RN, ANP-C
  • Donna Fabry, DNP, RN
  • Kara Hedman, BS, RN, Teaching Assistant
  • Deborah Raines, PhD, EdS, RN, ANEF                       


2nd Place awards for the most personal progress using TOEP tools and best peer mentoring and support:

  • Susan Grinslade, PhD, RN
  • Joann Sands, DNP, ANP-BC
  • Yvonne Scherer, EdD, CNS, RN
