The Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship Program, part of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) was created in 2005 and named after the late Senator McGee who was vital in advancing the issue of the nursing shortage. The program's aim is to increase the number of educators and adjunct faculty members at institutions of nursing education. Awards are given to registered professional nurses enrolling in graduate programs that will qualify them as nursing faculty or adjunct clinical faculty.

On receiving the news about being selected for the scholarship Renee states, “I am to be selected as a recipient of one of the Senator Patricia K. McGee scholarship awards. I just completed the first session in a 3 year program to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Family Nurse Practitioner degree. I am in pursuit of this degree to allow me to seek a full time tenure track position at The College at Brockport where I currently teach full time. Not only will the educational advancement allow me to seek a tenure track position but it will greatly expand the subject I may teach within the nursing programs. One of my dreams is to be able to provide health assessments to the underserved migrant worker population of Orleans County and the homeless population of Rochester, NY.  I have three children, one of which graduated last June and another who will graduate in 2017. Our third child is entering 6th grade so his higher education is a few years down the line. The cost of all of us headed to college concurrently or soon to follow me is enormous. This scholarship has relieved great concern over how to financially accommodate this degree and still appropriately support the education of our children. I am honored to be selected.”

Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship payments are available for up to three academic years of graduate study. Recipients must complete their graduate program within three years of receiving this scholarship. Awards cover the cost of attendance up to $20,000 annually.
