Faculty, PhD Alumna Contributors to AJN Book of the Year Award Winner

Associate Professor Carla Jungquist, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, and Rana Alameri, PhD ’17, were recognized for their contribution to a recently published psychiatric/mental health nursing book titled “Psychiatric–Mental Health Nursing: From Suffering to Hope” (2^nd Edition) By Mertie L. Potter and Mary D. Moller.

The book was selected for a 2020 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award. The work was lauded for being well-organized and highly informative, with a valuable cross-section of content contributed by nurses from a range of backgrounds in mental health nursing. The judges noted that the text “humanizes what it means to experience mental illness.”

The recognition of this work is particularly relevant to current health issues facing the nation – there is a high need for mental health professionals in the United States, and this need has been further magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The chapter written by Jungquist and Alameri, titled “Sleep-Wake Disorders,” includes several important learning outcomes. Students are able to: summarize the impact of biological, psychological, sociological, cultural and spiritual domains on normal sleep-wake states; categorize key characteristics and manifestations of different sleep disorders; contrast key characteristics and manifestations of disorders of wakefulness; evaluate different pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies used in the treatment of individuals experiencing a sleep-wake disorder; and plan evidence-based care for patients with sleep-wake disorders.

Each of the book’s chapters contains highlight reviews and NCLEX-RN questions, and chapters on disorders address pathophysiology and etiology, including the biological, psychological, sociological, cultural and spiritual domains of wellness. The book also includes case studies and offers a list of relevant websites in each chapter.
