Why UB?

I selected UB for my nursing education because it ranks as one of the top public schools in New York State. Its reputation of a high graduation rate, high quality academics, and affordable tuition made it a clear winner for me. My interest in research also affected my decision being that UB is a premier public research university in the northeastern United States.

Activities and Accolades

Among several scholarships throughout my college career, I have participated in the Kathryn W. Davis Global Community Scholars Program at Westchester Community College. For this scholarship, each group of recipients took part in service projects to address globally significant issues. My specific group worked with Neighbor's Link in Mount Kisco, NY, to empower the immigrant community through  education. I have also participated in Lehman L.I.F.E. (Leaders Involved for Everyone) at Lehman College. In this program, we raised funds to travel to Apopka, Fla., and work alongside the Hope Community Center dedicated to the empowerment of Central Florida's immigrant and working poor communities. While obtaining my degrees, I have also worked as a babysitter and medical receptionist in order to pay for books and living expenses.

What's Next

My current goal is to graduate from UB's RN to BS program and continue my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I would love to be able to care for the immigrant population. As an immigrant myself, I wholeheartedly understand their struggle and consider myself very lucky to be able to assist them.

Grateful

I immigrated to the United States when I was nine years old. In Brazil, I lived with my grandparents for almost two years while my mother was here saving money to pay for my flight. As a single mother, she has done a tremendous job in raising me to become the best nurse I can be. I have obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology from Lehman College and an associate degree in nursing from Westchester Community College. My experience has been nothing but amazing at UB thus far! I am learning virtually every day and plan to continue to become a family nurse practitioner in the near future.

As a scholarship recipient, I will be able to achieve one of many goals of obtaining my bachelor's degree in nursing. As a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipient, I have never been eligible for federal financial aid and have obtained my degrees with the help of generous donors.
