As a large state university, UB allows for ample opportunity and resources to engage in innovative and expansive research. The school of nursing is welcoming, warm and committed to supporting individual pursuits of higher learning.
My main research interest focuses on nurse-led models of care that improve health outcomes and quality of life, reduce hospital readmissions, and decrease hospital length of stay in medically complex patients. Specifically, as a community health nurse practitioner, I am interested in community-based interventions with a concentration on patients with congestive heart failure.
Secondly, I am interested in lateral violence in the nursing profession. In particular, the impact of educational interventions on incidence and prevalence of lateral violence in new graduate nurses. With a background in education and curriculum design, I am interested in nursing curriculum that specifically addresses lateral violence at a primary prevention level.
Pursuing a PhD is a decision that was thoughtfully and carefully considered over the course of many years. When weighing my doctoral options as a nurse practitioner, I was drawn to the idea of immersing in research and being at the forefront of the science of nursing. I have a long-range career plan of working in academia, educating future nurses, while supporting the science of nursing through theory development and research.
I hope through my entire career in nursing that I will have an impact not only on the patient populations that I serve, but also inspire and lead future generations of nurses to love the profession and achieve their full potential.
The scholarship funds have allowed for full time pursuit of my PhD without additional financial burden. I have transitioned my nursing practice to one day per week and I can spend the remaining days focusing on my schoolwork and spending time with my family.
