“As a student leader I think it's important to recognize people for their hard work, as it provides them with motivation to continue doing what they're doing. I would love to someday take what I've learned in college and apply it to a leadership position within the field. ”
Kwasi Adusei, UB School of Nursing Junior

University at Buffalo Alumni Association President Carol Goff, BS ’75, presented the Annual UB Alumni Association Scholarship Awards on February 7, 2014 in the Center for the Arts on the UB North Campus.

Four students received J. Scott Fleming Scholarships, among them was UB School of Nursing Junior, Kwasi Adusei. Kwasi is a member of the Class of 2015 and is currently serving as vice president of the Multicultural Nursing Student Association. He is very involved in student leadership and volunteer organizations including serving as the lead intern on the stress management program with wellness education services and as a member of Alpha Phi Omega, national service fraternity. In addition to all his volunteer activities and his studies he works part time as a student fundraiser for the University.

When asked about his reaction to being chosen to receive this award he stated, "I'm honored to have been selected for the award. As a student leader I think it's important to recognize people for their hard work, as it provides them with motivation to continue doing what they're doing. The goal is to create for others a memorable experience, and to inspire them to do the same. I would love to someday take what I've learned in college and apply it to a leadership position within the field. Getting involved with the ANA for example, and serving as an advocate for nurses is a particular goal that I strive for. First though, my focus is on becoming the best nurse I can be. I need to be a strong patient advocate before I can expand in my reach. The future is abundant with opportunities and I look forward to using them to leave a positive impact on the lives of others."

Established in 1985 as a student-to-student scholarship to recognize full-time undergraduate and graduate students for their leadership efforts, through extracurricular and volunteer activities, the awards have helped to promote student involvement and enhance the student experience at UB. In 1991 the $500 awards were renamed after J. Scott Fleming, who served as executive director of the Office of Alumni Relations and who exemplified the spirit of involving students, whom he called “alumni-in-residence.”
