The manuscript, titled "Barriers and Facilitators to Engagement in Rehabilitation among Stroke Survivors: An Integrative Review,” sought to understand the barriers and facilitators to engagement in stroke rehabilitation. In doing so, appropriate nursing interventions can be developed and implemented to improve engagement in this population, leading to better outcomes.

“This is my first manuscript to be accepted by a reputable journal,” Forgea says. “Getting a manuscript published has always been a goal of mine, so I am very excited about this accomplishment. I am thankful for the guidance and support Dr. Lorenz provided me throughout this process as my advisor and mentor.”

Forgea has been working with her advisor Rebecca Lorenz, assistant dean in UB SON’s PhD Program, since summer 2020.
“Nurse-led interventions have the potential to increase stroke survivor's engagement in inpatient rehabilitation, which is associated with less residual disability and improved quality of life,” Lorenz says. “This integrative review includes important findings to guide the development and implementation of nurse-led interventions to reduce barriers and increase patient engagement. Nurses can use these findings to plan evidence-based care to improve self-efficacy, therapeutic relationships and increase motivation.”

For many years, Forgea worked as a neuroscience nurse caring for patients with a variety of diagnoses, including stroke, where she gained an interest in studying the stroke patient population in order to find ways to improve their recovery experience and quality of life.

“As I start to embark on my dissertation planning, I look forward to continuing to study the stroke patient population,” she adds. “If I can make a difference in one patient's life, my work will be worth it!”
