Why UBSON?

I selected UB for its online PhD program in nursing, along with UB's reputation of being a great school.

Areas of Interest

I’m interested in the maternal/newborn population. I have worked with this population for several years and have seen babies transferred to a higher care facility and mothers left behind. This is heart wrenching to watch and nothing consoles the mother. I’m currently working on an intervention to my proposed problem of “What effect does transferring a newborn have on the maternal/infant bond?" I currently work on a labor and delivery floor.

Professional Goals

After completing my PhD, I plan to continue to do research and teach.

Health Care Impact

I want the intervention mentioned above to be webcam that goes along with the baby in the transfer so that the mother can watch. I would like to also include a recording of the mother’s voice, something the baby is familiar. The web cam would be on continuously so the mother is aware of what is happening to her newborn. If this is successful, this will have a positive effect on many mothers. Last year, 33 percent of NICU admissions at Children’s Hospital came from transfers.

Grateful

This scholarship allows me to focus more deeply on my research and gives me the opportunity to give back to the community.
