Alyssa Hamel, DNP, PMHNP-BC, RN, is a board-certified psychiatric provider, educator and researcher specializing in eating disorders and substance use-related education. She serves as Director for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, where she teaches specialty courses, advises DNP projects and oversees statewide clinical partnerships. Under her leadership, the program maintains a 100% board certification pass rate.
In response to federal regulatory requirements for substance use education, Hamel led enhancements to the core “3P” courses—Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and Physical Assessment—integrating substance use content across family, adult-gerontology, psychiatric/mental health and anesthesia specialties. As only the second school of nursing nationally to formally implement this education, Hamel’s work reflects early adoption of federal substance use education requirements while examining the impact of these curricular enhancements on student attitudes and stigma related to care.
Clinically, she previously served as the primary psychiatric provider for a comprehensive eating disorders program at Western New York’s largest mental health agency, BestSelf Behavioral Health, and now owns a private practice working with individuals with disordered eating and comorbid conditions. She serves as Co-Chair of the Academy for Eating Disorders Professionals & Recovery Special Interest Group, as an Ambassador for the Eating Disorders Coalition and as a member of the Erie County PASSS Committee. Hamel was honored with the 2025 PNAWNY and Buffalo News Nurse of Distinction in Education Award.
