Kamal Allen, a student in University at Buffalo’s traditional baccalaureate nursing program, was the 2023 recipient of Iota Eta Eta’s $1,000 student scholarship. Allen was selected based on his good standing in his nursing program, along with volunteer service and an essay describing the importance of service for humanity and the impact of cultural diversity and inclusion on society and the nursing profession.

Sophia Overton, MSEd, RN, clinical assistant professor in the UB School of Nursing, was presented with the Educator of Excellence Award at the celebration. Overton, who has a passion for educating underserved populations in health care maintenance and advocacy, has provided health education to patients in several roles throughout her career. She has also worked as an adjunct instructor at Niagara County Community College. At UB, she educates students in the areas of health promotion and nursing therapeutics.

Iota Eta Eta also recognized the 2022 scholarship recipients, traditional baccalaureate student Tahmina Aktar and 2023 baccalaureate graduate Lilian Igwe.

Iota Eta Eta is the Buffalo chapter of Chi Eta Phi, Inc., a national professional organization for registered nurses and nursing students. Iota Eta Eta is the first professional nursing sorority in the city of Buffalo, established in May 2021. Chapter members strive to provide service for humanity by participating in community service, mentoring nursing students, promoting health and wellness, and providing scholarship funding.
