Personal Statement: PhD Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing program prepares nurse scientists who will contribute to scientific knowledge. Graduates will assume leadership positions in academic, clinical and research settings. The purpose of this statement is for you to provide information about yourself and to demonstrate your ability to express ideas clearly and logically. 

The personal statement should be no more than 1,000 words, double-spaced and typewritten and should be free of grammatic and mechanical errors. Citations are not required. Please include your name and the program you are applying for. 

Your personal statement should provide information regarding the following:

  1. Describe your reasons for wanting to earn a PhD in Nursing. Provide any information about your background, training and experience that you believe is relevant to your qualifications for doctoral study.
  2. Briefly describe a problem with a focus on nursing science on which you would like to focus your research.
  3. Provide an example of how you have worked with diverse populations locally, nationally or globally. How do you believe your graduate education will help you to further your skills in working with people from diverse backgrounds?
  4. Please include anything else that you believe is pertinent to your personal statement that was not included in the above.
