Juarez, whose research interests include LGBT health, HIV prevention and US-Mexico community health, proposed the project “HIV Risk and Substance Abuse in Trans-Latinas on the Texas-Mexico Border” with four collaborators in Texas: City of El Paso Health, The Empowerment Group, Hidalgo County Department of Health and the Valley AIDS Council.

Yu Ping Chang, PhD, RN, associate dean for research and scholarship, served as Juarez’s internal (UB) mentor. Juarez also received mentorship from Alexandra Garcia, PhD, RN, associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing.

The CEPP Community-Based Health Disparities Research Mentoring Fellowship aims to support health disparities researchers through interdisciplinary mentorship and provides two fellowship opportunities for UB faculty members or teams to advance their community-based research in the area of health disparities.
