Chang is researching person-centered care (PCC), a novel approach to care of older adults living in long term care facilities and its effect on nursing home resident outcomes. Since PCC has been mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and supported by the Institute of Medicine, its adoption has become a major investment in terms of leadership and resources utilized to train staff and implement new practices. The importance of this study is to explore whether PCC offers to nursing home residents positive and meaningful outcomes related to creating an environment that promotes a true quality of life, regardless of physical or cognitive condition.

Focusing on comfort measures, Meeker’s funded research project, “Unveiling Comfort Measure Only (CMO): Nurses’ Perspectives,” proposes a systematic examination of practices related to CMO from the perspective of registered nurses employed in acute care settings. Future plans include utilizing the findings from this study to develop practice change interventions to promote the provision of CMO in person-centered end-of-life care settings.
