Faculty and Staff Reporting Guidance

Unprofessional or Inappropriate Behavior

At times, an individual’s behavior may not meet UB’s definitions of discrimination or harassment but can still be perceived as unprofessional or inappropriate. Faculty or staff may be harmed by interactions with someone who did not intend harm or harass. Faculty or staff may also witness unprofessional or inappropriate behavior. In these cases, the School of Nursing recommends that faculty and staff follow any of the following procedures to report these incidents.

Direct Reporting

  1. If you are uncomfortable addressing the concern directly with the individual, we encourage you to report the incident to your supervisor or chair.
  2. If you prefer to contact someone outside of your department, you may contact Assistant Director for Human Resources, Lynn Emminger.
  3. If relevant, you may also contact the School of Nursing's Sexual Harassment Information Advisor, Lynn Emminger.

Anonymous Reporting

If you prefer to submit an anonymous report outside the School of Nursing, you may use EthicsPoint, a confidential reporting service. Do not enter any patient-identifying information beyond what is required in the template fields. Submitting your report indicates agreement to comply with HIPAA regulations. EthicsPoint will send reports to UB anonymously and confidentially, providing access only to designated university officials trained to handle these reports with the highest confidentiality, based on the type of violation and incident location.

Workplace Violence and Bullying

The University at Buffalo is committed to providing a safe work environment in which the dignity of everyone is respected, the free exchange of ideas is encouraged, and all individuals are able to flourish. The university will respond promptly to threats, acts of violence, bullying, and acts of aggression by employees or against employees by coworkers, members of the public, students, or others.

Discrimination and Harassment

The University distinguishes between bias-related incidents driven by intolerant behaviors and illegal discrimination or discriminatory harassment based on protected factors, including but not limited to sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status and veteran status. Issues of discrimination and harassment are handled by the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.

If you believe you have been discriminated against or harassed based on a factor listed in UB's Discrimination and Harassment Policy, or if you have witnessed discrimination or harassment, contact the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at 406 Capen Hall, 716-645-2266, to make an appointment and report the incident. Anonymous calls are welcome for those who prefer not to give their names.
